"As far as I could tell, this town, with about 50,000 inhabitants, had, in French colonial days been an important administrative centre. The many interesting looking buildings about, such as the Town Hall and the hotel Le Campement, seem to have been the result. All these buildings stood in square landscaped gardens, and must have looked very attractive in their day. Sadly, now lack of interest and neglect is taking its toll, with this fascinating area looking very run down." - MH
