"The fish truck to Lake Turkana was to be quite an adventure. The warden gave me a lift into Kitale from the hostel so that I would be in time to catch the truck, which I had been told would be leaving at 8am. It did not in fact leave 'til early afternoon, and only after the driver had made a number of tours to see if he could pick up some more passengers. Once we did start I made myself as comfortable as I could on some sacks of rice in the back of the truck as we bumped along the dirt road. The other 8 passengers, all locals, made fun of me a bit, but it all seemed in good humour, and for the sake of keeping the peace I played along with it. The truck made a number of short stops in small towns before taking a very bad track through some mountains, and dropping down into a flat desert as it was starting to get dark. After a few more miles we stopped for the night. I was glad that I had brought my sleeping bag, for although there is something very nice about sleeping out under the stars in the desert, it can turn quite cold. One of the things I noticed as I lay there in the still of the night, was how the sounds of people talking in a small village carried across the desert, the village must have been at least two miles away ." - MH
