This has to be one of the kargest monasteries in India, sited over 27 acres of land. Built around the end of the 8th century the monastery was known as Somapura Mahavihara. It is one of the best known Buddhist viharas as well as one of the most important archaeological sites in the country,

and in 1985 became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
