"Oruro, an important railway and tin mining town, was not in itself very exciting, but set on the edge of a large shallow lake, with its flamingoes, this area on the Altiplano of barren landscape where the air is so clear you can see for miles, gave the place a strange beauty all of its own.
When I finished painting this picture of the marshes at the edge of the lake near Oruru, a boy who had been watching me, went and got a large key and opened up the church so I could see inside. The walls were draped with red and yellow cloth, it was quite dark and smelled quite musty." - MH
