"Cuenca was founded by the Spanish in 1557 and now has a population of around 10,500. At an altitude of 2,590m, about 7,800', it had a spring-like climate, which along with its well preserved colonial air, made it a relaxing and interesting place for me to spend the next 3 days. I had no trouble finding a small hotel close to the centre, and though it was not quite as posh as the one I found in Loja, it was still good value and had a good, convenient restaurant, just across the road." - MH
