"Trinidad, founded in 1514, this well preserved old colonial town became important during the 16th and 17th centuries as a centre for the slave trade, then later in the 18th century by the sugar cane industry. However, by the first half of the 20th century the town's importance declined, in favour of new developing areas, leaving Trinidad to become a back water, untouched for nearly a century. It now has a population of around 35,000." - MH
