Railway construction started in the latter part of the 19th Century and so the settlement of Nairobi grew.

 

"When I showed my permit to the station master I was assigned a man, who first gave me a conducted tour of the engine sheds and work shops, then, when I decided what I wanted to paint, got me a chair, and when the sun got too hot he stood behind me with a large umbrella to keep me shaded.
