"On the last of my 3 days at Kisumu I took a trip on a narrow gauge railway for a about 30 miles up to Lamu, a small town that was right on the equator. It was a slow but easy going journey as the train first made its way around the edge of the lake then up into the lush green hills to the north.

The town did not have a lot to offer but I found no trouble in passing away a few hours, first by painting the picture of the local bar, then having a meal and a drink in it, out of the heat of the midday sun.

While waiting at the station for the train on its return run to Kisumu, I remarked to the Station Master what a well kept station and garden he had. He told me very proudly that it had come second in best kept station in Kenya the previous year. Then I made the comment that with only one train a day he would have quite a bit of time to work on his station. He replied that on Mondays and Fridays he had two trains, and "they are both very busy days, sir".

From Kisumu that evening I took the overnight sleeper train back to Nairobi, for what was to be my last day in Kenya. It was a day to be spent looking round the shops, buying a few souvenirs, including some records of the local rhythmic music, which I had heard many times being played on the radios in bars, and had come to quite enjoy. Later that afternoon I caught the bus out to the airport for my flight back to London, after what had been one of the most easy going yet fulfilling trips I have ever made." - MH
