Built by Hubert de Burgh, Earl of Kent, in the 1230's Hadleigh Castle was certainly impressive. It’s true value, however, was only recognised by Edward 111 who saw it’s strategic importance in defending the Thames estuary against French raids during the Hundred Years War.
