"Though due to the weather I never got the chance to do any painting in Nuwara Eliya, when I collected my bag from the Travellers' Lodge on my return from the mountain (Pidurangala Rock), I was at least able to leave and continue my journey with the satisfaction of having climbed to the highest point in the country. After taking a local bus the 5 or so miles to the station I then caught an early afternoon train for a scenic ride down to Talawakele.
Talawakele turned out to be a pleasant town in an attractive setting surrounded by mountains, so, on seeing a government rest house, I decided to stop for the night. Despite overcast skies, the rain held off for a change, which gave me the chance to paint. The following morning I walked the 5 or so miles out from Talawakele to visit and paint the spectacular 240' St Clair's Falls. It was a scenic walk along a quiet road that ran close to the river and made for a nice little excursion. On my return to the town, in the early afternoon, I collected my bag from the rest house, and taking a bus, headed for Hatton, a town in the centre of the tea growing area." - MH
