Africa's 'premier meeting destination' and now known as The Kenyatta International Convention Centre. This 28 story building was ranked the tallest in Nairobi up until the construction of Teleposta Towers. The KICC is an internationally renowned venue for conferences and special events etc and conveniently located in the City Square of Nairobi.

"My journey to Kenya started with a flight in early November from London to Nairobi with the Russian airline 'Airoflot', the cheapest carrier I could find, but which involved flying via Moscow and Entebbe, in Uganda, not a very direct route but one that I quite enjoyed.

After a local bus journey from the airport into the city I booked into the YMCA close to the centre, and without any doubt the best YM I have stayed in. About £5 a night full board, my private room complete with balcony overlooking the swimming pool. All very nice.

I found Nairobi to be a spaciously laid out city with large parks and its main streets wide with many avenues of purple flowering jacaranda trees, it was hard to believe this city that seemed so well established had only been founded round the turn of this century.

Though only a hundred miles south of the equator the city stands at about 5200ft altitude, making the air fresh and I found pleasant for walking about, only spoilt by the notice in my room, and in many other tourist places, warning of pick pockets and muggers. I am glad to say I was not bothered but I met other travellers  later who had been.

Nairobi was an ideal place to make my base, apart from being almost in the centre of the country, it was also the centre for most people making safaries into East Africa with the resolute that the city had many cafés ideal for meeting other travellers with first hand information to help me plan my route." - MH
