The Antonio Maceo Revolution Square, at 16m high, is the highest statue in the whole country in honor to the hero Antonio Maceo Grajales.
"Santiago, Cuba's second largest city, was founded in 1514. Its good harbour made it an ideal site for a city and by 1523 it had become the capital, which it remained until 1552. Population about 500,000.
On the way back from visiting Morro Castle I stopped off at he dollar shop and bought some food for the evening meal, plus another bottle of rum to replace the one we had drank the previous evening. In the event we finished up drinking that one as well. Thanks to the good company of my hosts, Fernando and his girlfriend, these two nights spent in Santiago were the most enjoyable of this whole trip.
I got a meal here on my last day but was careful, this time, to keep off the locally made soft drinks. I painted this on my last morning in Santiago while I waited for the bus that never ran!" - MH
