The building of this Rococo Catholic Church was begun in 1766 and designed by the Brazilian sculptor and architect Antônio Francisco Lisboa; it features an impressive fresoed ceiling and is not gold heavy like other churches in Ouro Preto. Antônio learnt from his father Manuel Francisco Lisboa, also an architect, and an African slave. Poor Antônio suffered from leprosy and lost all of his toes, and some fingers, and when the pain got too much he cut off his remaining fingers.
