Salta is home to one the most important archaeological sites built by the Inca.

"From Tucumán I headed north again to Salta via a back road which I had been told would take me through some very nice countryside. I got a bus to a small town about a third of the way along and stopped the night. it was a beautiful spot situated in the foothills of the Andes so next day I thought I would just walk along the road and enjoy the scenery until the bus came. I found out later the bus that I had travelled up on the day before only ran once a week, little traffic came either and again I found myself walking till nightfall, when I reached a small roadside hut where I spent the night. Next day, after a few miles walking, I got a lift by a police car to the next town and an interesting lift from 2 government wine tasters, whom I spent the rest of the day with visiting the vineyards in the area, finishing up at the small town of Chicoana where I found a comfortable hotel and was able to pay the bill with 3 of the 4 bottles of wine I had been given at one of the vineyards.

Although quite a nice town, my main memory of Salta was a very good Chinese restaurant where not only was the food good but the proprietor spoke English. My first chance to have a good talk for 4 days. - MH
