"My bus arrived in Veracruz at 6AM, giving me time to have a good walk round before the sun got too hot. Though I had often heard mention of this city, and knew it to be the counrty’s major port, I had little idea what to expect . As it was, apart from a fairly attractive pedestrian precinct area in the centre, the only thing I found here of particular interest was the old trams, which unfortunately looked as though they were about to make their last run. Having felt I had at least seen the centre of Veracruz, on fiinding I could catch a midday bus on up into the mountains to Pueblo, I decided to move on. Making this fairly rapid progress towards Mexico City turned out to be a good move, as it gave me the chance to spend two full days in what was to be one of the most attractive parts of the entire journey.

Despite feeling a bit exhausted by all the travelling, on reaching Pueblo, I soon found being up on this high plateau, with its fresher climate and beautiful scenery quite stimulating, and I could not wait 'til the following morning when I would be able to have a better look. I had no trouble finding a comfortable hotel close to the centre, and after a good meal, I was ready for bed. I was up early the next morning to have walk round before breakfast. This central area of the city was most impressive, with many fine old buildings, but eager to see more of the countryside which I had been so impressed by the evening before, I took a bus out to Cholula, a small town 10 miles away." - MH
