"Painting made of the Temple of the Tooth from across the lake.

This temple, which houses Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist relic was built about 1700. The 'sacred tooth' is said to have been rescued from the Buddha's funeral fire in 543BC and brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th century AD.

Situated 72  miles away, and 1600' up in the hills, from Colombo, this city was like another world. The last capital of the Sinhalese Kingdom 'till it fell to the British in 1815, Kandy seemed to have lost little of its old world charm, despite it being the country’s second city with a population of around 89,000." - MH
