"The town had a number of good hotels, and like Turpan, seemed well geared up for the needs of travellers. To explore the area better, the next morning I ented a bike and spent an enjoyable day cycling round visiting the nearby places of interest.

The Mogao Grottoes were the reason most visitors made the long journey to Dunhuang. The caves tell the story of the great flowering of Buddhist art in China. There are 492 caves that had been hewn into the cliff face over a period of a 1000 years, starting from the 4th century.

Due to my late arrival, and the hassle I incurred trying to buy an entry ticket, I was not able to spend as much time there as Iwould have liked. I am glad to say I was a ble to get a lift back, this time in the cab of an army truck." - MH
