The Palace of Westminster lies on the north bank of the River Thames and is where the House of Commons and the House of Lords meet. The original palace was constructed in the 11th century, others have superseded it after being damaged by fire, the Second World War, and more recently air pollution. Big Ben, housed in the Elizabeth Tower, is now an iconic landmark of London and indeed of the United Kingdom.
