The impressive Shaharah Bridge was built to keep Shaharah safe from attack by invaders,

and succeeded for centuries until the use of air force during the Yemeni Civil War in the 1960's.

"Onthe other hand, the nearby famous Shaharah Bridge above, I found to be a most wondrous sight. This remarkable structure spans the twin mountains with a drop beneath its arch of nearly 1000 ft. It was built at the beginning of the 17th century by the Turkish architect Salah al-Yaman, quite an achievement for those early times." - MH
