Trafalgar Square only opened in 1844  although it had been a significant landmark since the 13th century. Nelson's Column stands in the centre at 169' and is guarded by four lion statues. The Mayor of London gives support to democratic rallies and demonstrations and access to the square is allowed for such causes, as well as the many celebrations which are held there. Norway has donated a Christmas tree to the square every year since 1947.
