"After a few days in Port-au-Prince I took a bus over the mountains to Cap-Haitien, the old capital and the second city. It was a long journey on a very crowded bus. The road, that had only been opened the year before to connect the two cities, was unpaved for a lot of the way and quite rough in parts. I did not arrive until late evening, and then had to spend over an hour walking from one end of town to the other, before finally finding what turned out to be a very nice guest house, run by an elderly French lady. The house, an old colonial building standing in a nicely kept garden, served good meals; staying there was like living in a bygone era but very enjoyable." - MH
