"Varanasi, India's most holiest city, (and dating back to the 11th century B.C.), was the next place we visited, and has to be the most fascinating. We stayed at the government rest house, and joined a tour ran by them that included an early morning boat trip on The Ganges, where we could see the many pilgrims taking a bathe in the holy river, and further along, watch the dead being cremated on wood fires on the banks, their ashes thrown in to the river.

The city was full of temples of all types, shapes and sizes, some very beautiful, some erotic and some quite bizarre. Like the one we visited where you could put a coin in a slot and watch a Hindu god move about, more like an amusement arcade, but wherever we went there was something of interest.

Due to the fact that we were keen to travel on to Kathmandu in Nepal and meet up with some other friends to go on a track before winter set in, we only spent 3 days in Varansi, but it was long enough for me to capture the feeling of this fascinating city." - MH
