Guilin lies along the main route leading from central China to Guangdong province.
It is in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the highlight of a sightseeing tour in Guilin. It originates from Mao'er Mountain (Mountain Cat) and travels for 170 kilometers, passing through Guilin, Yangshuo to the outlet of Gongchen River in Pingle County. Hailed as having the largest and most beautiful karst landscape the Li River is the only one from China to be featured in a list of the World's Top 15 Rivers.
"This trip down 50kms of the most beautiful part of the Li River from Kweilin to Yangshuowas for me the climax of the whole 1974 tour. Because our boat had to make a number of stops at narrow or shallow parts of the river to allow convoys of barges to come through from the other direction, I was able to make these two paintings. We returned from Yangshuowas to Kweilin by bus after a superb day out." - MH
