"Mosque and Yellow River, from one of the lower temples on White Pagoda Mountain.

The train reached Lanzhou about 10pm, and again the hotel recommended in my guide book was miles away, involving a very crowded bus ride. It was gone 11 by the time I had found the hotel, only to be told they were full. On asking what they could recommend for me at such a late hour I was told that if I did not mind a 4 bed dormitory room, they had a bed. As it turned out, I had the room to myself and it was as comfortable as the other hotel rooms I had had, and only cost me £1 for the night. Next morning, in the hotel restaurant, I was able to enjoy a western breakfast of eggs, toast, jam and coffee, it was a real treat.

Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu Province, was also an important communication centre for NW China. The city strung out for miles in a narrow valley along the southern bank of the Huang He or Yellow River, and from what I saw of the place it seemed an attractive city." - MH
